Comparison of Adjectives

REGULAR COMPARISON

Most one- syllable modifiers form the comparative degree by adding –er and the superlative degree by adding –est.

Example: Positive- hot            Comparative- hotter               Superlative- hottest

TWO- SYLLABLE MODIFIERS
The comparative degree is formed either by adding –er or by using more. The superlative degree is formed either by adding –est or using most. Some two-syllable modifiers can form comparisons either way.

EXAMPLES:
POSITIVE                     COMPARATIVE                        SUPERLATIVE
often                           more often                              most often
funny                           funnier                                    funniest
funny                           more funny                             most funny

THREE-SYLLABLE MODIFIER
Modifiers that have three of more syllables form the comparative degree by using more. They form the superlative degree by using most.

Examples:
POSITIVE                     COMPARATIVE                        SUPERLATIVE
Interesting                  more interesting                     most interesting

NOTE: All modifiers form the decreasing comparative degree by using less. All modifiers form the decreasing superlative degree by using least.

Examples:
POSITIVE                     COMPARATIVE                        SUPERLATIVE
common                      less common                          least common
